The Industrial Systems Institute participates in the Athens Science Festival 2021 on March 29, 2021 as part of the Athena Research Center participation.

Session: "Travel in the autonomous digital future"

Unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) programming for automated flight control

Spyros Kapodistrias, Konstantinos Lambrou, Evangelos Vlachos

Unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly known as drones, are used in an increasing number of applications, such as inspecting and exploring dangerous and complex environments such as disaster areas, the delivery of goods and medicines, and the assistance of communication networks. Autonomous guidance, navigation, and control algorithms are required to achieve these missions without direct or continuous human control. Our research group in ISI/ATHENA is working on the development of autonomous control algorithms for path planning and localization for drones. The aim of this short demonstration is to present the process of programming a drone through programming environments (Matlab/Simulink), and an example of automatic flight control involving virtual and real drones.

Artificial Intelligence in Connected Autonomous Vehicle simulators

Nikos Piperingos, Aris Lalos

The successful development of Connected and Automated vehicles relies heavily on simulation tools. An accurate simulator allows fast and secure verification of techniques over a platform that uses only hardware implementation. The goal of CPSoSAware and CAVSense projects is to create and use an integrated emulator using artificial intelligence / machine learning mechanisms and demonstrating their usefulness to the general public. Using hardware and software as well as a road simulation environment, young researchers, students and engineers have the opportunity to experiment and become aware of relevant technologies using an environment that helps them understand how performance, reliability, driving experience and decision aptitude are affected, by applying or configuring appropriately, different machine learning algorithms and most importantly taking into account the implementation costs (in terms of processing speed and power consumption) either in hardware or software.

Session: "Creating Living Virtual Labs"

Virtual labs using interactive technologies in virtual, augmented and mixed reality environments

Christos Anagnostopoulos, Aris Lalos, Chairi Kiourt

XRLabs focuses on modern educational needs of student centric educational systems without geographical or temporal constraints, new learning methods and rich social interaction utilizing digital educational material via virtual / augmented / mixed reality. The proposed dynamic content virtual lab platform is based on the learning model of serious gaming and combines basic and applied research with mature technologies so as to enhance the daily education practice in Greece and abroad via mixed and augmented reality.

ISI as a Living Lab

Christos Alexakos

Living Labs are ecosystems with adequate infrastructure to support the development and evaluation of novel approaches by real end-users. Industrial Systems Institute premises have been transformed into a living lab with the Institute staff as users.  Internet of Things infrastructure has been created by the Esmartcity project, related to the Smart City domain. Deployment of Internet of Things, environmental sensors and smart energy meters in buildings may be utilized in interoperability scenarios and exploitation of measurement data for building energy efficiency and energy consumption prediction scenarios.

Digital Twin in the Manufacturing Environment

Christos Anagnostopoulos, Athanasios Kalogeras

The Digital Twin exploits digital data that correspond to a physical world object so as to implement control, simulation and visualization scenarios. Digital Twins derive from engineering, yet they apply to different applications ranging from manufacturing, to Smart Cities and various other domains. In the context of the demonstration I3T industrial system demonstrator is presented and its Digital Twin.
