CV in Brief

Gerasimos Vonitsanos holds a PhD from the Department of Computer Engineering and Informatics at the University of Patras (CEID). His PhD thesis, “Efficient Algorithms and Novel Big Data Management Techniques and their Applications in Ubiquitous Computing”, focused on developing machine learning algorithms for processing large-scale, heterogeneous, and semi-structured data. His work emphasized real-time data analysis using platforms, such as Apache Spark, with applications in classification, clustering, anomaly detection, and streaming analytics. In parallel, his research explores algorithm design and computational complexity, aiming at efficient solutions for data modeling and processing in large-scale computing environments. His educational approach integrates core principles of algorithm analysis and compiler design, emphasizing the interaction between algorithms, data structures, and programming language translation to support the development of scalable and reliable information systems. He also holds an MSc in Informatics from the Ionian University, where his thesis addressed “Data Management and Knowledge Extraction over Spark”. Additionally, he earned an MBA from the Hellenic Open University. As of March 2025, he serves as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Patras, focusing on Information Systems Programming. His postdoctoral work aims to design and evaluate complex information systems, incorporating state-of-the-art technologies, such as cloud computing, microservices architecture, and automated development processes. His broader research interests include Big Data, Machine Learning, NoSQL Databases, and Artificial Intelligence. He has authored more than 60 publications in peer-reviewed journals and conferences, served on numerous program committees, and actively contributes as a reviewer for academic publications. He has participated in over 20 national and international research projects across institutions, including the University of Patras, the Ionian University, the Hellenic Open University, and the University of West Attica.
