Prof. Spyros Sioutas

SPYROS SIOUTAS is a Full Professor of “Data Structures and Software Systems for Big Data Management” in Computer Engineering and Informatics Department (CEID) (School of Engineering, University of Patras) and Head of “Information Systems and Artificial Intelligence” Lab in the Computer Software Division of the same department. His current research interests include: Large Scale Machine Learning and Cloud Data Engineering, Algorithmic Data Management, Data Structures and Database systems, Decentralized Systems for Big Data Management and Decision Making, P2P Systems, Indexing, Query Processing and Query Optimization. He has published over 230 papers in various high quality scientific journals and refereed conferences (amongst others SIGMOD, SODA, PODC, SIGKDD, CIKM, ESA, ICALP, CCGRID, ICDT/EDBT, SIGMOD Record, Algorithmica, Theoretical Computer Science, Computer Journal, Data and Knowledge Engineering, Journal of Discrete Algorithms, Distributed and Parallel Databases, Journal of Systems and Software, Knowledge and Information Systems, Information Science, ACM Computing Reviews, TLDKS) and he has more than 3000 citations. Good communication skills gained through his experience when tutoring and mentoring graduate and postgraduate students in the Ionian University as well as in University of Patras, in several courses. Also, in the past he was selected after reviewing process to attend as Post Doc Researcher the "EEF School on Massive Data Sets", held at BRICS, University of Aarhus, Denmark, during the summer of 2002. On April 2005, he attended as visiting researcher the «String Algorithmics» seminars held in King's College, University of London (Computer Science Department). On December 2008, he attended as keynote speaker the "MADALGO" (MAsive DA ta ALGOrithmics) seminars, held at BRICS, University of Aarhus, Denmark. The title of his talk was “Deterministic Data Structures over P2P Networks”. Leadership skills gained, as he was the Vice Head of Informatics Dept of Ionian University and director of ISD Lab for several years in the past. Also, from June 2013 to December 2017, he served as a Vice President and Legal Representative of the Research Committee of Ionian University. Also, He served as editor, chair and invited speaker in more than 50 scientific and prestigious journals, symposiums, conferences and international technological forums.
